Fifth Bass Guitar
The guitar played on this CD sounds a perfect fifth lower than a standard classical guitar, so I suppose could be called a fifth bass guitar. Playing this instrument for the first time the cello suites immediately came to my mind as the perfect repertoire for this instrument. Although most guitarists follow the practice of adding notes to the original, I have found the pieces absolutely perfect as they are.
The instrument was made by my husband, the guitar builder Otto Vowinkel.
Tuning
A classical guitar is usually tuned E A d g b e’
This fifth bass guitar is tuned A D G c e a
The tuning of a modern cello is C G d a
Transcription
For the transcription I used the violin version of Bach, The Fencing Master, by Anner Bijlsma, based on Anna Magdalena Bach’s manuscript in the Reinhardt edition, as well as Bach Sechs Suiten für Violoncello solo, Urtext, Edition Peters, nr 9054.
